The history of Kerala, is as interesting and striking as its varied geographical features that adds an awe-inspiring beauty and thus this place becomes a land of versatile appeal. Kerala is the melting pot of many cultures and civilizations – native as well as foreign and hence consists of a rich heritage.

Ancient Kerala occupied a unique place in the commercial world. The teak found in the ruins of Ur must certainly have come from the Malabar Coast. This means trade flourished around 3000 BC. Cotton from this region was a favourite in Egypt, the Phoenicians visited the coast of Malabar around the same time to trade in ivory, sandalwood and spices. King Solomon is said to have sent his commercial fleet to Ophir which is said to be somewhere in Southern Kerala.

Nothing definitely can be said about the original, early inhabitants of Kerala as there are no evidences or records, however according to the Archaeologists; the early inhabitants of Kerala were the hunters and food gatherers of Negrito tribe. Then came the the Austriches or the Austric people who resembled the present-day Aborigines of Australia and indulged in snake worship. The Austric people were followed by the Dravidians who migrated from the Mediterranean region. The Dravidians drifted away southwards but left behind their substantial cultural contribution on the Aryans (Indo – Iranians) who brought Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism along with them.

There’s no shortage of great rental properties available. But what are some things potential renters should know before they invest in a vacation property?

Each particular owner will have his or her own rules and regulations concerning basic amenities that they offer, what food (if any) will be available, what you’re required to bring, and overall maintenance and cleanup. But there are still basic courtesies that should be followed when renting a vacation property.

Whether you’re an owner renting your cottage out to visitors or you’re a family in search of a great property in which to spend a few weeks away from the bustle of the city, here’s some advice on vacation rentals for everyone.

Amenities

Many houses available for rent are owned and rented out by homeowners. (There are some hotels and resorts that offer house rentals but they’re few and far between.) While this means a home may be more practically outfitted with things like outdoor toys (boats, sporting equipment and the like) and kitchen necessities, it’s not a hotel -in other words, don’t expect fancy toiletries on the end of the bathtub or coffee stations set up on the counters.

If you’re renting out your home, make sure visitors understand what is included in their fees, and if you’re the one doing the visiting, ask the owner for a list of what is available at the house so you can pack everything else that you need.

Cindie Christiano’s husband, Greg, and his family own two cottages in Quebec they both use, as well as rent out. She said there is very little that she asks visitors to pack and makes almost everything at the house available to renters.

“They have access to the lake and paddleboats, and they don’t have to bring anything except their own linens,” she explained. This is a pretty common request among vacation rentals, so find out ahead of time whether you need to bring towels (bath, beach and dish), sheets, pillows (and pillowcases), and blankets.

Food

Renters, for the most part, are expected to buy all their own food -right down to condiments and other staples like sugar. But cottage owners like Christiano, who use their home in between renter visits, sometimes leave certain things in the kitchen that can also be used by visitors.

“They’re allowed to use anything in the fridge since we go up year-round,” Christiano said, “but we do ask people to take all of the food that they brought with them when they leave.”

Most places will have dinnerware, glassware and cookware available for visitors to use. But again, it is entirely up to the owner what, if any food or condiments are provided. Whether you’re the visitor or the one renting out a property, just make sure it is clear what can or can’t be used, and what should be brought in by the visitor and taken home at the end of the stay.

Cleanup

“Leave it like you found it” is the motto for all concerned. If the floors are swept and the bathroom is clean when you arrive, then you’re expected to be just as tidy when you and your family leave. Some homeowners will charge a cleanup surcharge in the event you don’t. Determine all of this prior to the stay.

While Christiano does expect renters to leave the house in good condition, she doesn’t fret over the little things. “I’m not worried about sand on the floor because that’s what happens in the country – it’s a cottage, after all,” she said.

Visitors should, however, do a quick cleanup before they leave.

It’s best to get all this in writing before the trip to ensure that both owner and visitor are clear on what’s required.

Renting a vacation house is a great option for families; you can stay in your routine (eating, bedtime, etc.), you have homier amenities than you would in a hotel, and prices for week-long stays can be much more economical than a per-night resort.

But do your homework; get all your facts straight and don’t leave things to the last minute. If you find it’s too late to book a place this summer, then consider a winter getaway. Or get started now on planning next summer’s holiday.

If you’re looking for a cottage, check with friends; word of mouth is a good way to find something. Or try a site like www.cottagevacation.com, but take the necessary precautions.

We’re getting ready to head down the coast for a few days of rest and relaxation – if a vacation with two small boys can be called relaxing. We go to an old motel with a stretch of beach so nice that the owners haven’t had to bother updating the furniture or putting chocolates on the pillows.

My husband says it has that “beach house” smell, while I’m pretty sure it’s Febreeze over dog. It’s the kind of place where there isn’t much to do except play in the sand and hang out. The owners wear socks with Birkenstocks and come out and roast s’mores with you. It’s our kind of place.

As a one-income family, even a modest vacation is a definite splurge. However, we’ve determined that even the briefest getaway beats the family staycation.

If you’re somehow not familiar with the term, a staycation is a vacation you take at home. The idea is that you save money on airfare and hotels and instead enjoy playing tourist in your own backyard. We’ve done several such faux getaways, and I can summarize my best staycation advice in three words: Just go somewhere.

Why would an admitted cheapie reject the staycation? To begin with, despite the numerous newspaper and magazine pieces published on the subject, no one else will understand the idea. My husband’s co-workers, for example, seemed to think he was merely playing hooky and called him with various emergencies the whole week of our last at-home sojourn.

Still, we got off easy. Friends I know have found their staycations interrupted by everything from unpaid child-minding for half the neighborhood to a little light plumbing work over at the in-laws. If you’re in Maui or Disneyland, this does not happen.

The second major problem with the staycation is that you are in your house. If you’re cutting out vacations to beef up the family coffers, there is a good chance that your house, like ours, does not feel like a relaxing spa retreat. As you sit on your couch you will find yourself noticing the hole some kid made in your wall with his light saber or the slightly off smell coming from behind your refrigerator.

Unless you have the good sense to grab some things and jump in the car, you will find yourself dealing with these problems. Even worse, you may find yourself so well-rested that you start to think about tackling some minor home improvement.

If there is a quicker way to ruin an afternoon than heading to a big-box home improvement store, I don’t know what it is. No hotel offers a special add-on package that involves trying to explain what a wax toilet bowl ring is to some bored teenager who doesn’t have a clue where you might find one.

Finally, the whole idea that a staycation is a money saver is a bit of a lie. The tourist traps near you are going to be just as expensive as the tourist traps somewhere else.

The difference is when your tour guide or waitress brightly chirps, “So, where is everyone from?” you’ll get to enjoy a lot of eye-rolling as she clearly thinks you should have known better.

Now, I understand that for many folks, a vacation of any kind, or even time off work, is out of the question. If you’re on the fence, though, let me suggest you pinch your pennies everywhere else. Clip those coupons, shop at the thrift store, put some old junk on eBay and throw everything you save in a jar. By the summer you should have at least enough to get a campsite at Rainier.

It may not be exotic, but it’s still beautiful, and with a little planning, you should be able to get yourself out of cell range.

Most importantly, you won’t be at home. And that, my friends, is priceless.
